A Social Micropayment Platform – Flattr
There definitely is not a shortage of micropayment platforms in the market (ie. ChipIn). All micropayment sites set out to accomplish the same thing, a way to easily donate money to web content or a cause you like. The newest member on the block is Flattr. Where Flattr attempts to differentiate itself from others is by using social networking.
The biggest craze on blogs are the buttons you can add to posts. You can add social buttons such as Twitter, Digg, Facebook and more. To keep up with the popularity of the buttons Flattr has created their own button you can add to your blog. If a user with a Flattr account enjoys your blog post they can click your Flattr button and you receive a donation from that visitor. Now here’s how it works from the visitors end. When you create a Flattr account you set a monthly donation bucket (you choose the amount). Each time you click on someones Flattr button you donate part of your monthly bucket to that blogger. The more Flattr buttons you click the more your monthly donation gets divided. So if you start with $20 a month and click on 20 Flattr buttons you’ll donate $1 per blog post you clicked. You never have to worry about going over your monthly bucket, it just keeps getting split. The only drawback for US users it that the amounts shown are in Euros. No problem though, that’s actually good news for US based blogs!
I’ve included a short video that Flattr made to demonstrate how the system works. So if you really like the content you read from your favorite blogs get over to flattr, create an account and show some love by giving a small donation.
