Change your mind, change your world

I passed a billboard on the highway yesterday for the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The tag line on the billboard read “find a business you can trust”. It got me thinking about another business that deals with business trust, Yelp. The BBB was founded in 1912 to help people report businesses that were either trustworthy or not trustworthy. Ninety-two years later Yelp was founded under the same principal. Yelp provides a way for users to voice their opinions about a business (restaurant, law firm, doctors, hotels and more). The biggest difference between the BBB and Yelp is that the BBB takes input via letters and phone calls, and Yelp via online reviews. So in principal there is really little different between the two. Both have the same underlying idea of user comments and recommendations.

If you were thinking about creating a website where users could give their opinion about businesses you would probably hear, “why would you do that, when you have the BBB”. If the founders of Yelp listened to this advice Yelp would have never been created. So next time you have an idea and you think there is already a similar business out there I challenge you to think differently. If you put your mind to it you can implement any idea you have, whether it’s ground breaking or recreating a business model/idea that is almost 100 years old.
