Don’t buy How-To books for websites

I’m sure there are some writers and publishers out there who will hate me for writing this post, but I just have to. I was at Barnes & Noble the other day looking at business books when I noticed a few books in the “Computers” sections. The books were about how-to  navigate different websites. One book was how-to navigate Facebook and another eBay. It really got me thinking about how ridiculous these books really are.

Instead of writing paragraph after paragraph here’s a list of the top two reasons why it’s ridiculous to buy how-to books for websites.

1. First and foremost all the major websites that books are written about have extensive tutorial sections. The tutorials tell you everything you would want to know about the site and how to navigate it.

2. Websites change constantly. By the time you buy the book the site navigation has probably changed and from the minute you open the book to the minute you’re finished reading the book the site has changed again.

After saying all that I do think it’s practical to write books about the concept and ideas of a website. Websites change a lot, but for large websites I don’t see a problem with writing a book about the history of the site, what the site is about and how it can help you, etc. As Dennis Miller says, “that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong”.
