Friends, Followers, Buddies?

There are tons of social networking sites on the web and each of them have a different name for a “request”. MySpace and Facebook call them “friends”, Twitter calls them “Followers” and instant messaging services call them “buddies”. I think it would be a cool idea if sites allowed you to choose what name you want to use. Instead of “followers” you could call them “bitches” or “hommies” or “feet worshipers”, etc. There’s something about “follower” especially that rubs me the wrong way. I’m not a follower and I’m sure not a cult leader. Let me decide, from a development standpoint I know it would be very easy to do.Thoughts? what would you call the people that you’re connect to?
