HOW TO: Unfollow inactive Twitter users in bulk
It’s that time of year again for Spring cleaning. Most people use the Spring to clean their house or organize their desk at work. How about taking a little time to organize the people you’re following on Twitter.
Twitter does not make it easy to see which of the people you are following have tweeted recently or not. Some of the users you are following may have not tweeted in months or even years. Going through each of your users one by one in a painstaking process and very time consuming. Thankfully there’s a tool out there that can automate this process. The tool is called TwerpScan. TwerpScan can quickly and easily unfollow inactive Twitter users you are following. After TwerpScan retrieves all the users you are following they display the users in groups of 100. By clicking date column you can reorganize the users by the last time they tweeted. From there select the users you want to unfollow and with a click of a button TwerpScan will automatically unfollow the users for you.
I ran the tool and deleted 40 users that haven’t tweeted since the end of 2009. I figured chances are if they haven’t tweeted since 2009 they probably don’t use Twitter anymore. In addition, if it’s important to you, this also helps with your following/followers ratio.
The only drawback to TwerpScan is that they can only retrieve up to 5,000 uses at a time. So if you’re following more than 5,000 users you’ll either need to cut that number down or just wait until TwerpScan increases this number.
There are a number of other cool features on the site besides the unfollow tool. You can also do the same bulk unfollowing for people you are following. Last but not least there is a tool to “drill down” and learn more about the habits of any user on Twitter. This is a cool feature that’s worth checking out. So remember, when you’re doing your Spring cleaning make sure to do a little Twitter Spring cleaning while you’re at it!
