It’s all about Quality over Quantity

It all started with MySpace and hasn’t stopped since, the desire to have as many “people” following you on your social networking sites as possible. The numbers game  has become so big that an underground culture has risen to fuel the desire to have as many friends/followers as possible. Just think of the MySpace train as an example and even Follow Friday on twitter. But does having a large number of followers really mean anything?

My argument is that quantity is far more important than quality. I can almost guarantee you that the followers/friends you receive via random adds will probably never look at your profile. Just like you they are trying to get as many followers/friends as possible. It’s all a numbers game, there is no real quality there. Don’t fool yourself for a minute into thinking if you have 10K followers/friends that it means you’ll get a reaction from all 10K. In fact you can do a real life test by simply writing a message on your social networking site that says “respond with a yes if you read this”. The people who are truly following you will reply and my guess is that percentage of people that will reply will be in the single digits (2% – 7%).

Don’t lose hope though, there is a way out of this and it’s through quality. The higher the quality of your followers/friends the more true interaction there will be and the higher potential for conversion. When I say conversion it can mean anything, business dealings, romance, friendship, etc. The quality users are far more important to you then having thousands of users that never pay you any attention.

My advice to you is to work hard on establishing quality connections with your target group rather than aiming to have as many connections as possible. In the end it’s not how many friends/followers you have, it’s about how many quality friends/followers you have!
