Why use the Twitter hashtag?
There is a lot of mystery surrounding the hashtag in Twitter. What the hell is it, when should I use, what does it do, etc.? Let me give you a quick explanation and present you with your hashtag PHD.
The hashtag in it’s most simplistic form is a way for other people to find/search for a particular topic. For example today is #tittytuesdy. If you tweet out tittytuesday without a hashtag when people search for tittytuesday your tweet will not come up in their search results. Only tweets with #tittytuesday will appear in the search results.
To follow up on this point, when you enter something with a hashtag it will be highlighted as a link. So your followers can click on the word/phrase and search results will automatically appear for other people that have used the same word/phrase with a hashtag in front of it.
So lets review, if you don’t put a hashtag before a word/phrase it will not appear in search results. HOWEVER, recent updates to Twitter have made it so results will appear for the word/phrase without the hashtag. So yes, go figure, this is why the damn hashtag confuses the hell out of everyone. One thing in this lessons is consistent though, if you put the hashtag before a word/phrase it will become a link and when clicked on will show the results of that word/phrase.
At this point you are probably having an understanding of how it all works or you’re even more confused. That’s the beauty of the Twitter hashtag, enjoy!
